In order to be more prepared for emergencies and prevent them, it is necessary to keep your home in safe order.
- Prepare an evacuation plan for your home. Label all doors, windows, stairwells, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers. Label a route to exit each room and add another route in case of emergency. Review this plan with all the members of your family and routinely practice evacuations.
- Smoke detectors are a large safety factor. Smoke detectors should be installed on every floor of your home. The detectors should be placed outside each sleeping area and tested once a month. Batteries should be replaced at least once a year.
- You should keep at least one fire extinguisher in your home. A multipurpose ABC fire extinguisher should be installed where it is easily accessible. All family members should be trained in the proper use of the extinguisher. Contact your local fire department for further information.
- At least one carbon monoxide detector should be installed in the house. This detector should also be placed near sleeping areas. Remember, carbon monoxide detectors are not the same as smoke detectors, both should be installed!
- If you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters (floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, winter storms) prepare your home with the necessary materials to keep it safe. Items would include sand bags, snow shovels, and shutters for your windows.
